Everyday present

In Williams, Marxism and Literature, one phrase stuck out to me, having to do with the everyday. It speaks of “the undeniable experience of the present” (128). While reflecting on this phrase, I thought of my circumstance in that present. I was lying on my bed last night, my bed finally made only an hour before, studying while the white noise of the tumbling dryer dominated the background. I listened further. I could hear my husband and son watching television together, leaving me in peace to read. This is an example my everyday present, and as a mother, wife and student, it presses on me. I need to fix dinner and try to keep the house somewhat clean. People need to eat and have clean clothes, and homework needs to be done. For me, the “experience of the present” is the tedious tasks of everyday chores. Oftentimes after a week has passed, I realize that those present tasks of the everyday are all that I have experienced.
